Before I ever completed the painting, Jackson Commandeers the Railroad in 1999, I knew I wanted to do a sequel showing another part of the operation. Since thoroughbreds, quarter horses, mules, etc. were conscripted for the arduous movement, some owners refused to part with their mounts, unless they drove them personally. The result was a joint military-civilian operation.

The Mud March
Description: Lt. Colonel Joshua Chamberlain & General Ambrose Burnside near Fredericksburg, Va., January 21, 1863
Attempting to flank Lee’s army, the march was conducted in the midst of a brutally fierce winter storm. The weather caused the road to be churned into an ocean of mud. It was “an indescribable chaos of pontoons, vehicles, and artillery,” a Federal officer would later recall – “wagons upset by the roadside, guns stalled in the mud – horses and mules buried in the liquid mud.” Even so, the battle-hardened soldiers of the Army of the Potomac did not give up.

It was one of the boldest cavalry operations of the Civil War. In July of 1863, General John Hunt Morgan led 2,500 Confederate cavalrymen on a daring, three-week raid through Indiana and Ohio. Morgan and his men eluded pursuing Federal cavalry, diverted Federal troops and resources and delayed important Northern military operations. In the beleaguered South, news of Morgan’s Raid boosted morale.
