Description:
According to legend, Old Befana hastily dismissed the Magi when they asked for help in finding the Baby Jesus. Feeling guilty, Befana later packed her sack with gifts and hopped astride her broom to visit each child in Italy, in case he or she was the Holy One of whom the Magi spoke.
To this day, Italian children set out their shoes on the eve of January 6 and awaken to find them filled with gifts . . . and to a cleanly swept floor.
